# Taxonomy

A taxonomy models a [class](/iea-task-43-glossary/terms/class.md) hierarchy. It is a classification scheme, especially a hierarchical classification, in which things are organized into groups or types. A taxonomy is a type of terminology-based ontology, where different terms are related using a subset operator.

<details>

<summary>TODO sort this mess of weird</summary>

Describes the relationship between different classes. What something “IS” rather than “HAS” (like in an ontology)

Hierarchical organization of data where domain knowledge is stored

It is a classification of a subject, generally with a hierarchical structure

Formalizes the hierarchical relationships among concepts and specifies the term to be used to refer to each; it prescribes structure and terminology \[references]

What’s the difference between taxonomy and ontology? Do we need both??

\*\*Note\*\*

By organizing a \[vocabulary]\[vocabulary.md] as a taxonomy, we can see how different entries are related to one another and how they fit into the overall structure of the vocabulary. This can make it easier to learn and use the vocabulary, and can also help understand the meanings of the entries and how they are used in different contexts. %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://iea-task-43.gitbook.io/iea-task-43-glossary/terms/taxonomy.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
